Habitat Schools

Overview

Habitat Schools are progressive K-12 institutions that centre their pedagogy around the relationship between learners and their environment — both natural and social. With campuses in Gurugram, Pune, and Bangalore, Habitat Schools are at the forefront of sustainability education in India.

Their participation in the SPC Initiative represents a deepening of commitments they have already made — connecting classroom learning about the environment to the global systems of trade and production.

Signature Programme: Trace My Product

Gurugram campus has pioneered the Trace My Product initiative, in which students select an everyday product (tea, chocolate, cotton clothing, coffee) and trace its full journey — from farmer to consumer. The exercise makes global supply chains tangible and reveals where fair and unfair practices occur.

The methodology developed at Gurugram is now being shared with Pune and Bangalore campuses, and has been documented as a transferable module in the [[shikshaShiksha Resource Library]].

Eco-Club Integration

Habitat Schools have long-established Eco Clubs. The Fairtrade programme integrates with these clubs, adding a social justice lens to environmental work — recognising that sustainable production is not just about ecology but about fair livelihoods.

Community Connections

All Habitat campuses benefit from strong connections with local NGOs, farmers' markets, and artisan cooperatives. These relationships provide:

  • Guest speakers and field visit opportunities
  • Partnerships for Fairtrade product sourcing
  • Community research data for student projects
